Darryl Strawberry
Darryl Strawberry finds himself in Queens, New York once again, and this time as a restauranteur. Darryl is a former American baseball player, one of the elite who played for both the New York Mets and New York Yankees. He also played with the Los Angeles Dodgers as well as the San Fransico Giants. Darryl was revered for his powerhouse home runs and commanding presence on the field, standing at 6 feet 6 inches tall. His seventeen year baseball career resulted in four World Series Championships, in 1986 with the Mets and in 1996, 1998 and 1999 with the Yankees. Darryl was voted eight times in a row, years 1984 – 1991 to the All-Star Game, a true baseball accolade. Additional rewarded merits included, National League Rookie of the Year, Home Run Derby winner and the prestigious 30-30 club.
Darryl stays very active and current in sports, business and philanthropy. He’s an analyst on the SNY network and has thrown the ceremonial first pitch at Shea Stadium, and now what is Citi Field. He completed a memoir, “Straw: Finding My Way” written with John Strausbaugh, where he narrates his life’s lessons highs and lows and focuses on his reclamation of hope, determination and the inspiration he lives by today. Darryl and his wife, Tracy founded “The Darryl Strawberry Foundation” which positively impacts the lives of any human being affected by autism.
In 2010 Darryl opens “Strawberry’s Sports Grill” with the sweet irony that he returns to where his big leaguer stardom all began, a short distance away from the Mets’ home plate. Darryl participated in the ninth season of The Apprentice where he announced the opening of his Queens’ restaurant. Strawberry’s Sports Grill will be a new home plate for all to enjoy the finest array of delectable bar fare, celebrate infinite sporting events and create unforgettable memories and in August 2010 he is being inducted to the Mets hall of fame.
Darryl is a cancer survivor, businessman, crusader for the autistic and honored American baseball player. He brings his affable and tenacious personality to yet again hit one out of the park with Strawberry’s Sports Grill.
